The Monastery of Our Lady of Mayfouq was the very first place Youssef Antoun Makhlouf (Saint Charbel) went to enter monastic life after secretly leaving his hometown of Bqaa Kafra in 1851. The Mayfouq Grotto (Saint Charbel el-Hsar) became his immediate refuge for solitary prayer and reflection during this first year of his novitiate, right across from the main monastery.
