When past meets present: Austrian artist Markus Schinwald paints over historical paintings, creating unexpected compositions that stand at odds with the portrayed agency of the subject–restricting them in essential ways. A quick look under UV light reveals the ornaments that the painter added.

The contemporary artist is now on show in Vienna. For the @mak_vienna, Schinwald developed scenographic installations inspired by highlights from the museum’s Vienna 1900 collection. Film set-like settings bring together objects, ideas and stories, inviting us to look at this influential era from a completely new perspective.
