So many of you have asked how I discern between my own voice and the Lord’s voice. While I’m certainly no expert in this, these are just some thoughts I had from my own experience so far.
1. Take it from this recovering perfectionist—You’re gonna get it wrong sometimes. Don’t let fear of hearing God wrong, stop you from having faith that He’s talking to you. Write down in faith what you feel He is saying, and if you need some extra confirmation…”throw out the fleece.”
2. When I hang out with my best friends, we sometimes have a lot to say to each other, and other times we can sit in comfortable silence. That doesn’t mean they’re mad at me, or they have forgotten about me. We can just breathe each other’s air and be content. Same goes for God. Like any close relationship, in time, You’ll learn His language, His tone, and what His facial expressions mean without Him needing to say much. In my opinion, the more intimate a friendship gets the less words that are needed. No need to explain yourself when the person next to you already knows what you’re thinking. Sometimes, He doesn’t even have to talk to me for me to understand what He’s saying…I can just feel Him smile and know.
3. Characteristics of God’s voice includes gentleness, faith, a call to do something uncomfortable but holy, conviction but still with kindness and grace, etc. If you are hearing someone talk down to you, point out all of your faults with no grace, and only add to the guilt and shame we face everyday, it ain’t Him. The devil has come to steal, kill, and destroy, and of course He wants to attack one of the most beautiful gifts we have on this side of Heaven—access. Pray for God’s voice and presence to become clear in these moments. If you still can’t clear out the muck, read the Bible or confess what you’re hearing to a friend and ask for guidance.
Journaling God’s voice has become one of the most precious things to me and it has opened up my heart so much more to what He longs for us as His children to grasp here—we are loved more than we know, seen when we feel invisible, and found forever in the Father.
