Episode 2: Charities vs. Non-Profits
People often use these two words interchangeably, but they are not the same thing.
In Canada, a non-profit can be incorporated either federally or provincially; in our case, AmeIyoba is federally incorporated. A charity is different because it has to be registered and designated by the Canada Revenue Agency, which is what allows it to issue official tax receipts for donations, something a non-profit on its own cannot do.
A non-profit can apply to become a registered charity, but the two are not automatically the same, and knowing the difference matters when you are deciding where to give or how to structure your own organization.
