Earning Our RR0001: Charity 101, Episode 4: The Call 📞

After nine months of waiting (a full gestation period, yes, I counted), the letter came. AmeIyoba Centre for Women and Children is officially a registered charity. 🎉

So what does that mean for you?

📄 Gifts to AmeIyoba now come with an official donation receipt that counts at tax time

💼 Employer donation matching can make your gift go further
📚 Gifts in kind, like books and school supplies, count too
🕊️ A gift in your will can leave a legacy for women and children

And for us, it opens doors to grants only charities can apply for, plus savings that send more of every dollar to our programmes.

Next up: Year 2 of our Education Readiness Program in Lagos, plus some amazing collaborations. Follow along so you do not miss it🩵🩵🩵

AmeIyoba Rising Series 🥳🤞🏽

Here are some snapshots from our Pilot project , we had the opportunity to introduce our mandate to this fantastic community. Students ranged from 4-13 and their excitement was contagious.

We have so much planned over the next months, including gaining our charity status in both Nigeria and Canada.

Again, this day would not have been possible without the constant support and encouragement from our “first” community partner @a.insight

Stay tuned 🫶🏽🫶🏽👏🏽 by @ameiyoba

Imagine Detty December, but with a twist✨

In approximately 70 days, I land in Lagos to find 200 people to positively impact. Last January, 80 children went to school with backpacks, water bottles, pencils and pens. This year, we are expanding. Same initiative, more children.
Would you help us make that happen? Tell me below. 👇

From logos to concept plans, to incorporation, to our pilot, and now charity status. Bio changes, website updates, and a lot of quiet work in between; take a chance and you might grow 🌱🤍✨ by @ameiyoba

What started as a scholarship application turned into a nine-month journey to become a registered charity in Canada 📝

Incorporation, by-laws, a first budget, an annual return, a full application, edits on every single one of our purposes, and a whole lot of waiting. Meanwhile, the work in Lagos keeps going.

So... did we earn it? Episode 4 is out next week!

Episode 2: Charities vs. Non-Profits

People often use these two words interchangeably, but they are not the same thing.

In Canada, a non-profit can be incorporated either federally or provincially; in our case, AmeIyoba is federally incorporated. A charity is different because it has to be registered and designated by the Canada Revenue Agency, which is what allows it to issue official tax receipts for donations, something a non-profit on its own cannot do.

A non-profit can apply to become a registered charity, but the two are not automatically the same, and knowing the difference matters when you are deciding where to give or how to structure your own organization.

Episode 3 is out next week.

Charity 101: Episode 1 🎬

Every registered charity in Canada has a business number that ends in RR0001, and over the past year we have been learning how much goes into earning one. Most of it has been paperwork and patience; an annual return, a first budget, and a by-law drafts.

Over the next few weeks I am going to take you through what that process actually looks like and why it matters for the work we do with women and children, so follow along for the rest of the series 🌱

Running a nonprofit and being a young woman in your twenties is difficult 🏃🏽‍♀️.There is a lot of planning, dealing with government agencies, and unexpected costs (we will share more about that later). But all that aside, we are thriving 🌱✨💋 by @ameiyoba

Nigeria turns 66 today 🇳🇬

For those of us in the diaspora, celebrating Nigeria can feel complicated. We can celebrate our culture and achievements while also being honest about the rising cost of living and the 63% poverty rate in 2025.

Nigeria is more than Afrobeats, food, and the pride we get from being Nigerian.

This post looks at where we are, where we’ve come from, and what it can look like for the diaspora to engage beyond pride. Specifically by staying informed, supporting work on the ground, and using our skills, resources, and voices.

If this resonates, share it with someone in the diaspora.

Children are being kidnapped from their classrooms in Nigeria, toddlers, teachers. Communities had no reason to expect this level of violence until it arrived at their door.

We spent the last few weeks researching, building this carousel, and being sobered by what we found. Education is one of the core pillars of Ameiyoba’s work, and we could not look away from what is happening.

This post breaks down the attacks in Borno and Oyo State, the history that led here, who is most vulnerable and why, what the government has and has not done, and how you can take action from wherever you are.

Insecurity anywhere in Nigeria is insecurity everywhere. This is not a northern problem, it never was, it belongs to all of us.

Education in Nigeria is officially free at the primary level. But that does not mean it is accessible.

Nigeria has one of the highest numbers of out-of-school children globally. According to UNICEF, millions of children are still not in school despite policies that promote free education.

When you consider the real costs, uniforms, transportation, supplies, and systemic barriers, it becomes clear that “free” education still comes at a cost.

This is the gap AmeIyoba is working to address, by focusing on access, not just availability.

Amelyoba is now accepting monetary donations.

We are currently raising $2500 to support access to testing at screening sites!

$25 can fund one test
$50 can support a full screening visit

Reducing financial barriers to testing is where access to preventative care begins.

If you have been waiting to support, this is where it starts!! No amount is too little.
