Please welcome us in joining Wenslo Garcia
@wenslogarcia this Friday, October 16th at the Joan Flasch Artists Book Collection for the third discussion in BRIDGES.
BRIDGES is an artist talk series hosted by the Latin American Student Society that advances critical discourse surrounding contemporary artists and cultural production. The series brings emerging Latine artists into conversation with students and broader campus communities, creating an interdisciplinary forum for examining the personal, social, cultural, and political contexts that shape artistic practice.
Wenslo Garcia (b. 1997, Houston, TX) is a Tejano painter and educator based in Chicago. He is currently pursuing an MFA in Painting and Drawing at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, where he also earned his BFA in 2021. His work has been exhibited at the International Museum of Art El Paso, Chicago Artist Coalition, SAIC Site: Incubator, Site: Brooklyn Gallery, and Bridgeport Art Center. He is a 2026 Luminarts Foundation Visual Arts Finalist and was named a Comfort Station 2026 Artist to Watch.
Garcia’s practice is rooted in the belief that painting is a living archive, bringing together historical techniques, personal memory, and contemporary experience within a single surface. Working primarily in egg tempera and water gilding, he interweaves family mementos, Hispanic ornamental traditions, and photographs collected in Houston and Chicago. Through his engagement with historical methods, Garcia approaches painting as a bridge between generations, creating layered images in which cultural memory and lived experience coexist.
