Cross Sea (Rouge Waves)
Oil on canvas
2026
108” x 72”

I’m putting a very small side note that the elevators and stairwells in McLean are too small for a 108” x 72” painting but only by 3”. I definitely cried when I had to unstretch this thing. Which I guess is good, because I’m usually not so attached to paintings I make. Please remember to keep your paintings under 108” if you are working in McLean. by @brittneyweiland

Brittney Weiland’s work grapples with bodily memory, pierced by tangled bias, under stress from relentlessly passing time. Automatic, free painting undercurrents her practice.

She waits for oscillations in the swirling, soupy paint, then pulls faces and figures that emerge through a series of internal and external interactions. Weiland confesses that she’s “pulling memory out through my fingers,” but, like dreams, the imagery is an amalgamation. Events of the previous days, weeks, and years intertwine to form novel, parodic representations. It’s all empty, oozing possibility until it is set and real. The real breaks down into digestible symbols, but retains its half-recognizable form.

Some more paintings from last semester. These are being posted from a place of gratitude. The first painting was bought, making it the first painting I sold outside of comic con work. It’s now in the possession of my classmate, @jiakai_eon , who is a fantastic artist. It was painted in November or December of 2025.

The second painting is a thought bubble: thinking about labor, intimacy, and water based materials. It’s an earlier thought and I’ve developed it slightly more since the initial painting done in February.

Mostly I’d like to thank the @elizabethgreenshieldsfdn foundation for allotting me a grant that makes it possible for me to start my MFA at @hunter.mfaso . I cannot believe that I received this grant and am incredibly grateful for it. Truly, it means the world. I am so grateful and feel so lucky.

I’m really excited to start at Hunter College this fall! The talent, skill, and dedication in my new cohort is extraordinary. I’m very, very lucky. by @brittneyweiland

Bear-Bah, Oil on canvas, 24” x 12”, 2026

Sharing two paintings I did last semester that I traded with friends who are dear to me. Both are painted on panels made by another friend. These paintings were kinda fun because I wasn’t stressing about them like I do with 9ft pictures. Just flowy gamsol with barely any paint in it. I’m trying to reorient toward texture like I do with my water based paintings but keep color depth.

I have no place or time to paint until next month. I’ve been doing a lot of sketching and but I’ve been giving them all away to other artists at comic cons before I remember to take a picture. taken in Chicago, Illinois, USA by @brittneyweiland

I have a major life updates! After only two years in Chicago, I am moving to NYC to pursue my MFA at Hunter College! Emily and I will be moving mid August!

I am beyond excited for this new chapter but definitely feeling bittersweet about leaving all of you that I now love so much. I’m going to miss it all. I’ll miss my friends at SAIC, @logan.vegan, walking around Chicago, my advanced painting cohort, and especially my RT crew, who are like family to me.

It’s been the most wonderful time in Chicago. I love this city. I’ll be coming back several time a year, so it’s not a forever goodbye. I’m just so extraordinarily grateful for all of you. The community around me is irreplaceable. I am so thankful I got to be a part of it.

Half-Hanging, Loose Thoughts (but useful as infrastructure)
Oil and charcoal on canvas, 2026

Thank you to everyone who came out and supported me and my graduating cohort at the 2026 Spring BFA Exhibition. It was such an honor to show alongside so many talented and hard working artists. I have absolutely loved my time at SAIC and have made so many lifelong friends and memories while here. A special thank you to my wife, who has been working endlessly so that I could receive an education. I love you endlessly @chibitasm taken in School of the Art Institute of Chicago by @brittneyweiland
