On October 3, Bulgaria returned the remains of King Samuel after more than a thousand years—transporting them from Greece to Sofia with special state honors and placing them in a marble sarcophagus in the Basilica of Saint Sophia.

According to medieval primary sources and scholars Nikoghayos Adontz and Hovhannes Ivanov, Samuel had partial Armenian ancestry; accounts say his mother, Hripsimia, was an Armenian noblewoman and the daughter of King Ashot II of the Armenian Bagratid dynasty.

Bishop Tatev Hakobyan—Primate of the Armenian Diocese of Romania, Locum Tenens of the Armenian Diocese of Bulgaria, and Pontifical Delegate to the Balkan countries—and Kevork Krigoryan, Director of the AGBU Varna office, attended the historic ceremony by official invitation. Additionally, Shoghakat TV interviewed Krikoryan about the event.
