Today is World Mental Health Day and I want to ask a really important question. Why are so few psychiatrists trained in hormones and why do so many doctor say that there is no association of mental health with hormone changes? These are just a few of the women who have shared their stories on my @drlouisenewsonpodcast, and I hear similar stories every day in my @newson.health clinic, from women who reach out to me on social media and from women I meet at events. Anxiety, low mood, rage, brain fog, panic attacks, feeling like they’ve lost themselves. For so many of them it started when their hormone levels began to change, often leading to PMS, PMDD, postnatal depression and for so many these symptoms were diagnosed and treated as a mental health problem alone. This results in women being prescribed psychiatric medications rather than hormone treatments - which would address the underlying cause. The vast majority of psychiatrists do not have any training in mental health and hormones meaning that they do not prescribed progesterone, estradiol or testosterone as treatments for women. When women with hormone imbalances are given the right diagnosis and are prescribed the right dose and type of bioidentical hormone treatment then the results can be both life-changing and life saving. That’s why there is an urgent need for better education for ALL healthcare professionals, and why women deserve the choice about hormone treatments. #WorldMentalHealthDay #HormoneHealth #MentalHealth #Menopause #PMDD #WomensHealth
