From forest canopies to our winding roads, raptors play a vital role in keeping the Timucuan Preserve’s ecosystems healthy. Here are a few raptors that you can find within the Timucuan Preserve:

🪶American Bald Eagles – Known for their “bald” heads, these American icons create huge nests that can weigh over 200 pounds.
🪶Red‑shouldered Hawks – Often heard before they’re seen, these woodland hunters use keen eyesight and agility to track down reptiles, amphibians, and small mammals.
🪶Great Horned Owls – Silent fliers whose feather structure muffles sound, making their nighttime hunts nearly undetectable.
🪶Black Vultures- These fearsome fliers lack a voice box which limits their vocal abilities to hisses and grunts.

Which of these birds have you seen in the Timucuan Preserve?

If you want to learn more about birding, visit the park's website at: https://www.nps.gov/timu/learn/nature/birds.htm
