A dramatic black and white 35mm film photograph of a church roof, cross weather vane, and flock of birds silhouetted against a dusk sky, framed by Ilford HP5 Plus film borders.
A split-screen black and white image of a church steeple at dusk, with the left half showing a pale inverted film negative where the church appears white, and the right half showing a dark silhouette positive.
An unedited DSLR macro scan of a 35mm black and white negative showing a soft gray metallic sky with a bright white transparent silhouette of a church cross and roof.

Dusk brings out a different kind of architectural tension. Looking up at this steep roofline as the light faded, the flock began lining the crest of the roof and scattering past the cross. The high contrast of monochrome film strips away all color distraction, leaving only pure shapesβ€”the rigid iron cross, the sharp roof slope, and the fluttering outlines of birds against the evening sky.
I exposed this on my Nikon F3 using Ilford HP5 400, hand-processed the roll in my Paterson tank with ILFORD ID-11, and digitized the negative using a Nikon D5300 DSLR macro setup. By dropping the shadows in the positive conversion, the church becomes an absolute silhouette while retaining the delicate forms of the birds in flight. This bisection highlights the chemical duality behind black-and-white film. On the left, the raw macro scan shows how unexposed shadows leave the emulsion clear, turning the dark roof into a glowing white shape against a soft sky. On the right, the digital conversion renders the scene in stark silhouette, capturing the mood of a quiet evening. Slicing th

The tension between sharp architectural silhouettes and scattering birds at dusk is why black-and-white film never gets old. What is your favorite detail in this study?
