This one goes deeper than a T-shirt.

In 1992, I was suffering from crack cocaine addiction, homeless and sleeping inside a cardboard box underneath the stairs of an apartment building in East Oakland.

Around Thanksgiving, on a cold and rainy night, I heard WWF SURVIVOR SERIES playing through somebody’s wall. Those people didn’t know me, but they invited this wet—and probably stinking 🤣—homeless stranger inside.

For a few hours, I forgot about the drugs, the rain and my cardboard box.

I WAS JUST A WRESTLING FAN AGAIN. ❤️👊🏽

I watched BRET “HITMAN” HART defeat SHAWN MICHAELS and successfully defend the WWF Championship.

Then SANTA CLAUS came out at the end. 🎅🏽

It was a joyful ending, but I was homeless. I had no warm home, Christmas tree or presents waiting for me—only my cardboard box outside in the rain. 🎁🌧️

I was still that child who grew up in a life he never chose.

I DIDN’T CHOOSE THE HOOD.

THE HOOD CHOSE ME.

I adapted to my environment and made bad choices, but deep inside I was always trying to do good.

Before I left, those beautiful people gave me food to take with me. They gave me more than a meal—they gave me kindness, dignity and hope. 🙏🏽❤️

I never forgot that moment. It is why I have compassion for others today, because I know exactly how hard life can become.

More than three decades later, I’m clean, creating and still loving professional wrestling.
