A little warning ahead of Tuesday because I need to get this off my chest and there are swear words lol I know it’s better to be professional. To be polite. To choose my words carefully so the next person who needs help doesn’t feel judged or scared to ask. I really try. But sometimes 🖕 fuck it. A new girl is coming to us Tuesday and I’ve already seen the videos. She is so severely obese she can barely walk more than a few steps. She is declawed on all four paws. She was dropped off in a LUNCH BAG. No real information other than that she “pees outside the litter box.” Maybe she does. Or maybe she literally can’t fit in the litter box. At the shelter? Problem solved. She uses a flat pan. What a miracle. So shocking 🙄 And before anyone says, “Well, at least they brought her somewhere safe.” YES. I am glad she’s being brought somewhere safe. I’m glad she’s getting a chance. But that does NOT erase what happened to get her here. I hate how “at least they brought her somewhere safe” somehow seems to negate all the shit that happened beforehand. Extreme pet obesity is neglect when it gets to this point. I’m not talking about a chonky cat or an animal who needs to lose a few pounds. I’m talking about an animal who can barely walk. That is harmful. That is life altering. That is limiting. Overfeeding an animal to the point that they can no longer physically function is not kindness. It is not love. I’m sorry. It is the truth. I can be grateful she is being surrendered AND furious that she was allowed to get this bad. Both things can be true. She deserved better long before Tuesday. I don’t know if she’ll make it through it all like Biggie did but we know she will be loved.
We got Bologna’s repeat bloodwork back and honestly, we are really encouraged by what we’re seeing 😍 In the bloodwork from 8 days ago, there were some pretty significant liver abnormalities. Her bilirubin was 112 and her ALT was 251, and because she had been losing weight a little faster than we wanted, our vet was concerned about possible hepatic lipidosis (fatty liver). So for the last week, the goal has not been weight loss. We’ve been concentrating on supporting her liver and making sure she is getting enough nutrition. She’s had fluids, a B12 injection, and we added daily Denamarin, taurine and L-carnitine. She’s also been getting Recovery food and is currently eating about 394 calories a day. And then we got these results back. Her bilirubin went from **112 to 6** in one week. Her ALT went from **251 to 105**, and the other abnormalities on her first bloodwork have also improved or returned to normal. That is a HUGE change and definitely something we are happy to see. We’re still taking this seriously and we’re not going to rush anything. Bologna has had no weight loss this week and that is completely okay. There will be no calorie deficit for now ❤️Her liver comes first. We want to keep her stable, well nourished and supported before we worry about putting her back into a weight loss plan. These results are so encouraging. That’s about a 95% reduction. In cats with hepatic lipidosis, a ≥50% fall in bilirubin over 7–10 days is generally considered a favorable response. Shes an overachiever or we caught it early enough to make a big difference 😍 hoping it stays this way. We will continue treatment for a few more weeks and then revisit a calorie deficit then.
Dodu is ready for his close up & the long lost return of @jiminy_thickets family.
