Gaskets are sealing components placed between two surfaces to prevent liquids or gases from leaking. They are commonly used in car engines, plumbing systems, industrial machinery, and household appliances. Gaskets are usually made from materials such as rubber, silicone, cork, or metal, depending on the temperature and pressure they must withstand. A car’s head gasket, for example, seals the space between the engine block and cylinder head, preventing coolant, oil, and combustion gases from leaking into the wrong places.
Interestingly, something as simple as a damaged gasket can cause an entire engine to fail. A blown head gasket can lead to overheating, coolant loss, and serious engine damage. Gaskets work by compressing between surfaces and filling tiny imperfections that would otherwise allow leaks. They’re basically the unsung heroes of engineering: inexpensive little components preventing extremely expensive disasters.
