Sarah, a woman with red hair, sunglasses and a red fleece, stands on a grassy clifftop above a turquoise sea with a white lighthouse in the distance. Text reads: “I’d never fundraised before. Strength-tober changed that.” Caption: “Sarah’s story: from AS diagnosis to first-time fundraiser.”
Sarah, seen from behind, raises her hands towards a gym mirror, where her smiling reflection is visible. Question: “What inspired you to take part in Strength-tober and fundraise for NASS?” Answer: “I was diagnosed with AS in March 2025, then in last August my rheumatologist told me I needed to improve my strength, do more stretching and increase my cardio, to help my core muscles and sacroiliac joints. So when I learned about the Strength-tober challenge it came at the perfect time!”

The page shows £800 raised (16%) of a £5,000 target by 21 supporters, with “Give Now” and “Share” buttons. Question: “How did you go about securing your first few donations?” Answer: “I’ve never done a Just Giving before. But have supported and sponsored many other people’s. So I just set up my own, with a little info about my story. Up until that point I hadn’t really told many people that I’d been diagnosed with AS, so it was a good opportunity to explain a bit about it, and about NASS, too.”
Three torn-paper-style screenshots of Sarah Kirkman’s fundraising page updates. Top: a post dated 19 August 2025 about her first gym session, thanking Jacqui at Vanbrugh Physio in Greenwich, with a photo of Sarah facing a gym mirror. Middle: a post about attending two strength classes in a day, thanking her Pilates teacher Val and mentioning her first live Yoga for AS class, with a photo of Sarah smiling and holding pink dumbbells. Bottom: a post dated 9 September 2025 thanking donors for their generosity, mentioning her Pilates session and strength-based Yoga for AS classes, and that she has signed up for an AS-specific gym assessment and personal programme.
Sarah smiles at the camera in a navy t-shirt, holding two purple dumbbells up at shoulder height. Question: “What advice would you give to someone who’s thinking about setting up their own fundraising page?” Answer: “I posted little updates every week or so throughout the challenge. Just so people who had sponsored me could see what I was doing, and progress I was making. Maybe this also helped to continue to generate additional sponsorship throughout the month.”
Sarah lifts a purple dumbbell above her head, looking off to the side. Question: “What have you enjoyed most about taking part in Strength-tober so far?” Answer: “I’m not doing the challenge this year, because unfortunately in March this year I was diagnosed with another autoimmune disease, and just have too many health challenges going on. But last year I really enjoyed the support and camaraderie on the various groups that were set up. They were very motivational. Good luck to everyone participating this year!”
Navy background with a cut-out photo of Sarah on the right, standing in a grey t-shirt and holding a black resistance band. Text reads: “Ready to fundraise? Start today. Sarah had never set up a JustGiving page before, and she still raised money for NASS while doing something she was already doing for her health. You don’t need a big following or a big story. Just a page, a few words about why you’re taking part, and a weekly update. Set up your page today and make every rep count for NASS.” A blue banner at the bottom reads: “P.S. Taking part in Strength-tober? Share your page and tag us!”

Taking part in Strength-tober? 💪 You could be raising money for NASS at the same time. Sarah did it for the first time last year, and she shares what she learned...

What inspired you to take part in Strength-tober and fundraise for NASS?

"I was diagnosed with AS in March 2025, then in last August my rheumatologist told me I needed to improve my strength, do more stretching and increase my cardio, to help my core/SIJ. So when I learned about the Strength-temper challenge it came at the perfect time!

Since my diagnosis, NASS, a charity I’d never heard about until my diagnosis, has been an incredibly useful source of information and support. So this was a fantastic opportunity to give something back."

How did you go about securing your first few donations?

"I’ve never done a Just Giving before. But have supported and sponsored many other people’s. So I just set up my own, with a little info about my story - up until that point I hadn’t really told many people that I’d been diagnosed with AS, so it was a good opportunity to explain a bit about it, and about NASS, too."

What advice would you give to someone who's thinking about setting up their own fundraising page?

"I posted little updates every week or so throughout the challenge. Just so people who had sponsored me could see what I was doing, and progress I was making. Maybe this also helped to continue to generate additional sponsorship throughout the month."
