Pope Leo XIV has arrived at Rome’s Gemelli hospital for surgery on a nodule found on his lung during a medical check-up.

The 71-year-old had said his medical team "believe it would be right to intervene" and assured the nodule was caught at an early stage.

The Vatican has suggested that the Pope is expected to need around one week to recover from the operation.
