SINATRA - Born in Hoboken, New Jersey, to Italian immigrants with roots in Liguria and Sicily, Frank Sinatra came of age during the swing era, though his influences stretched further back, to the era when jazz and “sweet” music were in constant competition for the spotlight. The popular male singers of his youth Bing Crosby and Al Jolson shaped his early vocal style, but Sinatra also absorbed lessons from the legends who would later define jazz: Louis Armstrong and Billie Holiday among them.

Known to the world as “Ol’ Blue Eyes,” Sinatra is widely regarded as one of the greatests entertainer in the history of American pop culture. His remarkable career spanned over five decades, from the late 1930s to the 1990s, evolving with the times and leaving an indelible mark on music, film, and society. Despite dropping out of high school and lacking formal music training, Sinatra’s natural gift for storytelling through song transcended his inability to read music. His first major hit, “All or Nothing at All,” seemed to foreshadow both the arc of his career and his relentless pursuit of artistic perfection.

Sinatra was as complex as he was iconic, winning nine Grammy Awards, three Academy Awards, the Presidential Medal of Freedom, and a Congressional Gold Medal. His personal life was equally storied, with romances involving some of Hollywood’s most captivating women, including Ava Gardner, Lana Turner, Juliet Prowse, and Mia Farrow. Beyond his artistry and larger than life persona, he was a passionate advocate for social causes, speaking out against anti-Semitism and championing the Civil Rights Movement, all whilst giving generously to countless charitable endeavors. Among his many collaborations, his work with the legendary Quincy Jones and Count Basie’s Orchestra stands out as a personal favorite.
