Last week, we opened Riverberi Festival at @oceanspaceorg in Venice with “La laguna in bottiglia”, a performance-presentation developed with artist Fermín Jiménez Landa.
The event brought us back to where our “Chapter 1” began: a maritime journey from Venice to Rotterdam developed in 2025 with artists Fermín Jiménez Landa and Laura Palau Barreda. Travelling aboard different kinds of vessels and following existing routes across the Adriatic, Mediterranean and Atlantic, the project explored the ecological and material conditions of the waters we crossed, as well as the human and non-human relations connected to them.
During that journey, Fermín collected water from the Venetian lagoon, froze it and carried it from freezer to freezer aboard the different vessels all the way to Rotterdam, where it was eventually released into the water. Its brackish composition became part of the work itself: depending on its salinity and organic matter, the lagoon water froze differently -sometimes clear and solid, sometimes cloudy, fragile or only partially frozen.
For “La laguna in bottiglia”, Fermín returned to this gesture, creating small bottle-shaped ice forms with waters of different compositions, each containing a material trace collected around the lagoon. As the ice slowly melted, we invited the audience on a walk around Ocean Space to present “Chapter 1” through conversation, photographs and the story of the journey.
Returning to the lagoon was a way of revisiting -and temporarily closing- the first chapter of Oceanographies Collective from the place where it began.
