The longer I coach, the more I realize the job is not simply to know more.

It’s to understand better.

Understand the person in front of me. Understand what they need now, not what they needed six months ago. Understand what they can tolerate, what they respond to, where they’re struggling, and what is actually going to move them forward.

That also means constantly dissecting my work.

What did we do?
How did they respond?
What changed?
What does that mean for tomorrow?

Because the athlete is never static.

Their body changes. Their life changes. Their confidence changes. Their experience changes. Their sport changes. The demands around them change.

So the plan has to be durable enough to have direction, but flexible enough to evolve with the person.

The longer road of coaching is learning that my job is not to force someone into my system.

It’s to keep refining my understanding of the person, the demands, and the path between where they are and where they need to go.

That is what makes coaching hard.

And that is what makes it meaningful.

The longer I coach, the less it becomes about proving what I know, and the more it becomes about understanding what they need.
