One Word For Her ….? 👀🙈

Someone I was talking to on line over the last few weeks, asked to meet for dinner. I agreed. Spending too much time chatting on an app without meeting is a dangerous place to be. Both sides start to build a narrative. It’s best to meet, if there’s interest.

I’m not offering this story up to generate a certain type of response. I’m grown, and have done the work to be comfortable in my skin. In ways that were impossible when I was younger.

But I share this as a reminder that we’re all human. I think the idea of us to others, sometimes, can feel a bit detached of our humanity maybe because we’ve become accustomed to commenting on images. Or on people’s social media pages where their realness feels removed from the photo we see on our phones.

It started well enough, the date. Met at a cute restaurant, and the small talk felt easy. As the evening went on, food and drinks came out, and the conversation continued, I kept noticing that my date would casually look/stare at my stomach. Maybe he’s not always comfortable with eye contact, I thought.

Then the waiter asked us if we made room for dessert. I said we’ll look at the menu. When the waiter walked away my date shifted awkwardly in his chair before saying, “I don’t know how to say this, but I feel I should before we go any further.” I had zero clue as to what he was going to say next. “You’re larger than I expected. Fat. It’s okay. It’s just not my thing.”

If you know anything about gay men & dating, in most (not all) circumstances there has usually been some shirtless (at the very least) photos exchanged. I was honest in my stats. 63, 5”11”, 235 and my shirtless photo was a week old that proudly showed my open heart surgery scar, love handles & belly. I’ve learned since my surgery this is a dealbreaker for some, so better to claim it early.

Surprisingly, my ego isn’t bruised & I’m not sad. Wait, I am sad. But not because of what he said. He’s entitled to his preferences. And I am fully aware of what I look like. But I’m sad at the casualness of the comments. He had a slight discomfort starting, but once he got it out, he was ready to take it to the next level. PART 2 in the comments.

At this rate, she’ll be the next president 💀
