Time to meet the artists for ‘The Warp and the Weft’ ; an open call exhibition showcasing the work of Sussex based artists and makers.

Meet Virginia Bridge!

@virginiabridge works across painting and printmaking, using geometric abstraction to explore how form, colour and surface affect us on an emotional level. Drawing on architectural structures and the rhythms of modernist design, she creates compositions that balance precision with a more intuitive, expressive quality. Beneath this formal language lies a deeper interest in the limits of representation, and in what can be communicated beyond the familiar or easily defined. Her work asks us to spend time looking, allowing our responses to emerge without the need to find a single meaning.

Opus 2607

‘The work is rooted in the tradition of hard-edged geometric painting but tempered with an interest in materiality, surface texture and effacement. The process of making is undertaken in an elusive quest for perfection; always a balance between intuition and consideration, between planning and impulsivity. The need to control is always a driver that can sometimes be relinquished through working in silence, in a zen-like meditative state, enabling more intuitive decisions to be made. I often start with a working drawing as a plan and, as the work evolves, intuition takes over.

As an elder queer nearing the end of my seventh decade, my life has been a journey through a hostile environment. Masking and control have been essential survival strategies, with authentic self-expression often supressed. Shame, internalised homophobia and rage have been dominant emotions from which a contemplative practice gives both respite and outlet. I grew up hiding my identity and subsequently worked in education against the backdrop of Section 28. Caution and control were branded into me. It was a form of suppression and I see this exercise in restraint , this wrestling with the tension between control and chaos, playing out in my work.’
