Rose… she’s one of those love or hate notes.
Some people may think they dislike rose because they connect it to the artificial rose perfumes that dominated the 80s and 90s- that nose stinging, powdery rose that clung to everything. But that isn’t what rose is. And it certainly isn’t what rose has to be.
I adore rose on so many levels.
She’s a symbol of beauty, resilience, devotion, and power- a flower tied to goddesses across the entire spectrum of light and shadow.
Persephone, Artemis, Aphrodite, Hekate, Freyja, maidens, lovers, witches, queens of thresholds and underworlds.
Rose belongs to all of them.
She is softness and danger, sweetness and thorn, blessing and warning.
In lore, the rose is the guardian of the garden, a protector of beauty, a sentinel at the boundary between what is safe and what is sacred.
And in fragrance, she can be just as complex.
My favorite rose is a dark, resinous, myrrh soaked rose: lush, seductive, shadowed.
Our Mourning Garden sample set carries rose in four completely different forms, each one showing how versatile she truly is:
Hekate: Rose with cypress, a meeting of guardians: the keeper of the garden and the keeper of the crossroads.
Southern Gothic: Dried rose married to jasmine and incense, a haunting floral drifting through southern graveyards.
Victorian Mourning: Overripe, wilting rose wrapped in funeral incense, a dark ritual of grief and love.
Lux Aeterna: Delicate rose with beeswax, amber and myrrh, a devotional rite of anointing and remembrance.
If you think you dislike rose… try her again.
Set down the rose stigma.
Give yourself a spritz.
You might find she’s not the flower you remember and you may just fall in love with her.
