Opera Singers and Grad School…

I want you to think about what you need from a program to be successful. Too many of us think that traditional school is the answer to our problems and for some of you… it is.

The worst thing we can do for ourselves is do something because we think we are supposed to. If you want to go to grad school, you should go and understand why you’re going. If you enter with a plan of what you’re going to take away from the school, what resources you will receive and what opportunities you have to grow it can still make sense.

Grad school with a high price tag that goes on more student loans doesn’t feel like the right move in 2026. If you can win a full ride or have your family pay for it… go for it. If you need to pay out of pocket I would much rather see people delay grad school and save up the money to pay out of pocket. The student loans are crushing our community with the gig pay rates.

Make sure the program fills the gaps in your education.
Make sure the teacher is the right fit.
Secure the funding before you make your final decision.

What questions do you have around grad school?

I definitely grasp the third concept the most when it came to deciding to pursue my masters in performance. I felt I need these resources to actually put me in situations and opportunities where I have to grow as a singer.
