HISTORY FAVOURS THE UNHINGED (EVENTUALLY, AT LEAST).

This is a convenient argument to make once you know which books became classics and which songs everybody knows by heart.

But what do you do before any of that happens?

An idea SHOULD be able to withstand interrogation. You can be wildly attached to something and still need to do serious work on it.

SOME criticism makes the work better. But, some just carefully removes everything that might have made it yours.

Some questions to consider:

Is this difficult to understand because I haven’t expressed it well enough, or because I’m attempting something unfamiliar? Does the strange bit need cutting, or have I simply not worked out how to make it belong? Am I improving the idea, or making it easier to defend?

Some more thoughts on interrogating your ideas before they reach the world ON OUR NEW SUBSTACK:

**Provocations by Creative Living**.

The first essay is where we’re taking this idea further: the creative decisions, the inconvenient details, and the much harder business of recognising where good judgement has become obedience.

Myha'la Herrold has spoken out about what she describes as "unconscious racial and cultural bias" within the format of Celebrity Traitors.

The 30-year-old American star of the BBC drama Industry made an early exit from this year's series, becoming the first Faithful contestant to be voted off.

Her departure followed that of actor Richard E Grant, who was banished as a Traitor.

In an Instagram exchange following her elimination, Ms Herrold reflected on her experience of the show, suggesting that the way she naturally expresses herself may have appeared suspicious to fellow contestants unfamiliar with someone like her.
