Beneath a dark wooden cabinet with yellowish plastic adjustable feet, a familiar scenario for any furniture installer plays out: the cabinet is tilted and the foot needs adjusting—but as long as the furniture’s weight rests on the foot, the ribbed adjustment ring won’t budge. The installer employs a simple homemade tool: a long wooden handle with a flat steel head, similar to that of a nail puller. He slides the flat metal head under the edge of the cabinet and presses the handle down; the corner lifts a few millimeters, and in that instant, his free hand turns the foot. Two tasks that would otherwise interfere with each other—lifting and turning—are now performed separately. After a few quarter-turns, the cabinet body sits level—confirmed by the spirit level—and the tool disappears back behind the plinth. The corner bearing the load leaves a distinct mark on the light-colored floor, while the next unadjusted ribbed ring waits nearby.
