Hanging from the courtyard gate—which features a red metal railing—is a small, olive-green, homemade component that looks unassuming at first glance: a wire bent into a loop with a ring at the end. When the green gate opens, the loop swings over the post, and the ring drops behind the railing pipe simply by its own weight—locking the gate in place. The gate stops at a fixed angle without swinging further, and the wind cannot slam it against the adjacent glass. To move on, you simply lift the gate slightly; the ring releases, and the process begins anew. There is no spring lock, no bolt, and no mechanism prone to wear—just geometry and gravity, fashioned from a single piece of wire and coated to prevent rust. While the red railing next to it has been rusting for years, the green loop looks almost new—a small contrast that speaks volumes.
