Following Mahatma Gandhi’s assassination on 30 January 1948, the Government of India banned the RSS on 4 February 1948, with Home Minister Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel approving the decision. The government accused members of the organisation of involvement in violence, including arson, robbery, and murder.
In a letter to Jawaharlal Nehru dated 27 February 1948, Patel wrote that a fanatical section of the Hindu Mahasabha, operating under Savarkar, had conspired to assassinate Gandhi.
Later, in a letter to Syama Prasad Mookerjee dated 18 July 1948, Patel stated that the activities of the RSS and Hindu Mahasabha had created an atmosphere in which such a tragedy became possible. He also described the RSS’s activities as a threat to the existence of the government and the state.
The RSS ban was lifted in July 1949 after negotiations with the government. The organisation agreed to adopt a written constitution, function as a cultural organisation, operate within Indian law, and work openly rather than secretly.
History reminds us that even the leaders who helped shape independent India held serious concerns about organisations operating in its political and social landscape. Understanding their words is essential to understanding that history.

India is a secular country only because the majority population is still Hindu. See what happened in Kashmir where the majority were not Hindus but people from one particular religion. Was it not there responsibilty there? Ya sara responsibility sirf hindus ke liye hai? 😅 Not spreading hatred just spitting facts and asking question. Imagine TCS jese organisation meh conversion ho rha h aur konsi community kar rhi thi...Hindu?
