![On this day, 29 October 1948, a massacre by the Israeli army took place in the Palestinian village of Al-Dawayima killing hundreds of people (content note: physical and sexual violence).
One Israeli soldier, S Kaplan, wrote a letter to a newspaper describing what happened:
“There was no battle and no resistance (and no Egyptians). The first conquerors killed from 80 to 100 [male] Arabs, women and children. They killed the children by smashing their skulls with sticks. There was not a home without its dead...
Arab men and women who remained in the village were shut into houses without food or water. Then came sappers to blow up houses. One commander ordered a sapper to put two old Arab women into the particular house that was going to be blown up with them inside. The sapper refused, saying he took orders only from his commander. So the commander ordered his soldiers to shut the women in, and the horror was perpetrated.
One soldier boasted that he had raped an Arab woman and then shot her. Another Arab woman who was carrying a newborn baby was made to clean the courtyard, where the soldiers eat. She did that service for a day or two, and in the end she and her baby were shot.”
The newspaper did not publish the letter.
Around 60 people were murdered in the local mosque, most of them elders, and 85 people who sought refuge in the nearby cave of Iraq al-Zagh were also murdered there – including women and children. Estimates of casualties range from 200 up to 500-1000, according to the US consul. After the massacre, the surviving residents of the village, which previously numbered around 3700, fled as refugees in the West Bank and Jordan.
A few years after the massacre, the Israeli village of Amatzya was established over a portion of the ruins of al-Dawayima.
