It is with heavy hearts that Northland Rugby Union acknowledges the passing of Cheryl Waaka MNZM.

A two-time Rugby World Cup champion, proud Black Fern, trailblazing coach and passionate advocate for women’s rugby, Cheryl’s contribution to our game was nothing short of extraordinary.

Her achievements spoke for themselves. Two World Cup titles, a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to rugby, and recognition as a Northland Legend of Sport.

But Cheryl’s greatest legacy goes far beyond the accolades.

Through her work at Northland Rugby, Cheryl dedicated herself to creating opportunities for girls and women across Te Tai Tokerau. She didn’t just grow the game. She inspired people, broke down barriers and paved the way for generations to follow.

To those who knew her, Cheryl was more than a rugby legend. She was a colleague, a mentor, a friend and a much-loved member of our rugby whānau.

Our deepest aroha goes to Cheryl’s whānau, friends and everyone fortunate enough to have known her.

Cheryl, you represented the black jersey with pride, carried the North with mana and left our game better than you found it.

Your legacy will live on in every young girl who pulls on a rugby jersey and believes she belongs.

Once a Black Fern. Forever a Northland legend.

Moe mai rā, Cheryl.
