The Tale of Station 109.1 aired on Are You Afraid of the Dark in February 1995 and became one of the most unsettling episodes in the entire run of 90s Nickelodeon horror.

The episode aired on February 11, 1995 as part of Season 4. It was written by Alan Kingsberg and told the story of a lonely teenage girl named Hillary who starts calling into a mysterious late night radio station. The DJ, played by Daniel Pilon, speaks directly to her, knows personal details about her life, and begins to pull her into a supernatural world through the radio broadcasts. The twist reveals that the DJ is actually an angel of death guiding her toward a fatal car accident she is about to experience. The episode ends with Hillary surviving after choosing not to listen to the DJ’s final instruction, but the broadcast fades back in at the end with the DJ promising to come for her eventually.

Are You Afraid of the Dark ran on Nickelodeon’s SNICK block from 1992 to 1996, with a revival run from 1999 to 2000. It was created by D.J. MacHale and produced by Cinar Productions in Montreal. Along with Goosebumps and Tales from the Crypt, it taught an entire generation of American kids what horror storytelling actually was. The Midnight Society framing, with Gary, David, Betty Ann, Frank, Kiki, Sam, Tucker, Stig, and Megan passing the storyteller role around the campfire, became one of the most iconic cold opens in children’s television history. The phrase “Submitted for the approval of the Midnight Society” is still quoted by millennials three decades later.

Station 109.1 specifically scared a generation of kids off late night AM radio for life.

The 90s Nickelodeon episode that made the radio feel haunted.
