My Pregnancy Journey, Part 1:

I planned to run all 9 months of my pregnancy, carry my baby to full term, and then settle into the kind of postpartum bliss I had imagined for years.

I never imagined being admitted to the hospital at 28 weeks, waiting and hoping our baby boy would survive long enough to make it to a safe and mandatory delivery at 34 weeks.

I have always relied on my body.
I’ve pushed it through countless miles, workouts, races, and finish lines. I’ve asked it to do extraordinary things, and it has always answered.
But for most of this pregnancy, I resented it.
For the first time in my life, I couldn’t muscle my way through something. I couldn’t train harder. I couldn’t push through the pain. I couldn’t will my body into doing what I needed it to do.
Everything was out of my control.

At 28 weeks, the doctor said the words:
“Absent end-diastolic flow in the umbilical artery due to placental insufficiency.”

PLACENTAL INSUFFICIENCY.

💭 Insufficient.
💭 Inadequate.
💭 Incompetent.
💭 Inhospitable.

That was all I heard.
That was how I began to see my own body.
I felt betrayed by it.
How could the body I had trusted my entire life fail me at the most important moment of it?
How could it fail to give my baby the blood, oxygen, and nutrients he needed to grow and survive?

I felt like I had failed him.

I felt like a failure as a mom before my child was even born.

Give those ears some love! ❤️

Ears The Christ discusses the fate of New York hustlers who ventured into Washington, D.C., only to be driven out or murdered. He references a story shared by Ms. Tee about Daddy and Hector, two Harlem drug dealers who expanded their operations into D.C. but were both subsequently killed.

During the late 1980s and early 1990s, Washington, D.C., became widely known as the “murder capital” of the United States, amid a dramatic rise in homicides fueled in part by the crack cocaine epidemic and the violence associated with the drug trade.

Daddy and Hector were not the only New York dealers drawn to D.C.’s lucrative drug market. Perhaps the most infamous example was Alpo Martinez, a Harlem drug kingpin who established his operation in DC and became involved with local dealer/enforcer Wayne “Silk” Perry.
