The World Surf League’s statement announcing the suspension of a Championship Tour surfer refers to conduct at “a private gathering” in Tahiti in August. It notes that the gathering was not affiliated with the league. It does not identify who was involved or explain the allegations behind the suspension.

Here is what has been reported elsewhere.

Surfing World reports that the incident followed the final day of the Tahiti Pro and involved a teenage Australian surfer and at least three men. Surfing World and other outlets have identified the suspended surfer as Al Cleland Jr. French-language media have described the case as an alleged sexual assault of a minor. New South Wales police have reportedly been notified of the allegations.

The difference in how those accounts frame the incident matters.

Cleland is one of surfing’s most prominent athletes. Raised in Boca de Pascuales, Mexico, he is the son of Alan Cleland Sr., a former professional surfer from the San Diego area who coached him. Cleland Jr. made history as the first Mexican surfer to qualify for the Olympics, win the US Open of Surfing, and join the Championship Tour. His two major sponsors, Quiksilver and Monster, have reportedly dropped him without publicly explaining their decisions.

The WSL has announced his suspension but has not specified its duration or publicly explained the conduct that prompted it.

No criminal charges have been confirmed, and allegations must not be presented as established facts. But procedural language does not exist in a vacuum. When a teenage girl is at the center of serious allegations involving a prominent athlete, the league’s responsibility extends beyond issuing a carefully worded statement.

The WSL owes the public transparency about its actions, accountability in how it handles allegations of this gravity, and a clear explanation of how it is addressing the matter while protecting the privacy of the young person involved.

A suspension without meaningful explanation leaves the public with questions. A statement about a “private gathering” does not answer them.
