The behind the scenes footage of David Lynch directing Blue Velvet in 1986 captures the specific gentle intensity that made him one of the most singular American filmmakers of the last 50 years.
Blue Velvet released on September 19, 1986. It starred Kyle MacLachlan as Jeffrey Beaumont, Isabella Rossellini as Dorothy Vallens, Dennis Hopper as Frank Booth, and Laura Dern as Sandy Williams. Dino De Laurentiis had given Lynch complete creative control over the film after Lynch had delivered the commercially disappointing but artistically ambitious Dune in 1984. De Laurentiis specifically let Lynch make Blue Velvet with no studio interference as part of the deal that convinced him to direct Dune in the first place.
The behind the scenes footage captures Lynch at 40 years old during production. He wore his signature uniform of a buttoned shirt and khakis every day on set. He spoke in his gentle Montana accent. He gave actors cryptic abstract direction rather than specific line readings. Dennis Hopper has said that Lynch simply told him Frank Booth was Dennis, and let Hopper build the terrifying character from his own instincts. Isabella Rossellini described Lynch as the most emotionally supportive director she ever worked with, despite the extreme content of her scenes.
Blue Velvet introduced the specific aesthetic and tonal palette that would define Twin Peaks four years later. The suburban surface. The violence underneath. The dreamlike pacing. The uncanny soundscapes. All of it was built on Blue Velvet first.
Lynch passed away on January 15, 2025 at age 78. Every piece of behind the scenes footage from his career has become more precious since. The Blue Velvet footage specifically captures him in his prime, building one of the most important American films of the 1980s while gently guiding his actors through some of the most disturbing material of the entire decade.
The gentlest man on set making the most disturbing film of the year.
