I thought my room was dark enough. Then I covered the tiny LED on my smoke detector and the gap under my door. The difference was shocking.

Even small amounts of light - a streetlamp through the curtains, a charging LED, a hallway light - signal to your brain that it is not fully night. Your melatonin production drops, and you spend less time in deep, restorative sleep.

Now I use blackout curtains and a simple sleep mask. It costs almost nothing, but my sleep quality improved more than with any supplement I have tried.

Send this to someone who wakes up tired.

Do you sleep in complete darkness, or is there always some light in your room?
Save this for tonight.

Fun fact: Your eyelids only block about 80-90% of light. Your brain can still detect that streetlight or hallway glow and it suppresses melatonin. I learned this the hard way. What finally fixed it for me was covering that tiny gap under the door. Game changer. Are you team pitch black or do you sleep with some light on?

My quick checklist for 100% darkness that made the biggest difference: 1. Blackout curtains - not regular curtains 2. Electrical tape over all LEDs (smoke detector, AC, charger) 3. Towel or draft stopper under the door 4. Sleep mask as backup (I use a silk one) Takes 10 minutes to set up, costs almost nothing. My deep sleep went from 45 mins to 1h 30m according to my tracker. What’s the brightest light source in your room right now?
