As a top executive at the Internal Revenue Service, Kathleen Walters was tasked with protecting taxpayers' personal information. When the Trump administration created the Department of Government Efficiency, it targeted her, according to a new book.
The Department of Homeland Security started pressuring Walters and the IRS to hand over the personal information of undocumented taxpayers. She resisted, and eventually resigned. The IRS gave up the data after she left.
Walters is one of the government workers author Michael Lewis profiles in his book "Blockers." He says she was one government employee trying to protect private data from being weaponized by the Trump administration before DOGE pushed her out.
