The Department of Homeland Security started pressuring Walters and the IRS to hand over the personal information of undocumented taxpayers. She resisted, and eventually resigned. The IRS gave up the data after she left.

Walters is one of the government workers author Michael Lewis profiles in his book "Blockers." He says she was one government employee trying to protect private data from being weaponized by the Trump administration before DOGE pushed her out.

The toxin's impact is hitting fish, sea otters, terrestrial animals like wolves, and small businesses in Alaska.

Poisonous algae has always been a factor in harvesting shellfish. But as climate change warms oceans, these dangerous algal blooms are becoming increasingly common.

"People are concerned about an expansion of the possible bloom window," said researcher and professor John Harley.
