On 6 August 1945, U.S. pilot Paul Tibbets flew the Enola Gay over Hiroshima and dropped the first atomic bomb used in war - Little Boy. Tibbets described the mission as a calm and carefully planned military operation. He knew the bomb carried unprecedented power, yet his focus remained on executing the orders with precision. Moments after the drop, a massive mushroom cloud rose over Hiroshima while the shockwave struck the aircraft miles away. Tibbets later said he believed the bombing forced Japan to surrender quickly, helping end World War Il and potentially avoiding a prolonged invasion that could have cost even more lives. Throughout his life, he maintained that he simply carried out his duty as a soldier, even though the attack brought immense destruction and loss.
