It is actually pretty simple. Let a band express themselves however they want. It is art and you are not obliged to listen to every song. If you like some songs, great. If you don't, also fine. But it is art and if they like to try something else, let them. If it is about money, they will see if people like it and might react depending on what is in focus. But if it is about passion, they might not care, or find other people who like it. Don't make it about yourself because you wouldn't like others to do that to your art.

I don't mind a band changing direction slightly from what I'm used to, but when a band either sells out or completely ditches everything that made me like them in the first place, then that's dumb in my opinion.

The genocide supporters in @disturbed is an exception; they never released anything good. It just one fucking song, for decades.

You can stick to a familiar sound while still adding and changing elements. Gojira is a great example. Started as straight death metal, moved into a more progressive sound, settled on something in between. Bring Me The Horizon was straight blistering DXC, then progressively moved to metalcore, then a post-hardcore sound. When that got them more fame, they abandoned harsh vocals, two stepped dropped tunings, and basically everything that built their identity to make mainstream pop-rock. And then when that didn't work, they decided to go full in on AI art with a re-recording of their DXC album - and the re-recordings sucked and were phoned in. Your argument is disingenuous and intentionally poorly worded.

You just described Motionless to a T. Tbf I've loved every evolution of theirs.

I’d rather artists I love make the music they want that is authentic to themselves even if I don’t like it than keep making music so I don’t complain. I can find other artists doing something I like and now people that like the new music have something they like

Its better for a band to create the music that they want since thats how they built their fan base to begin with. Elevating their sound may result in some fans dropping off, but you'd gain much more in return. Authenticity is everything
