I’ve been sitting with this since Saturday and I’m still shaking.
A man stood on the biggest comedy stage in America and told millions of people that women at the gym dress like wh*res. And the room laughed.
Something you probably don’t know about me (@cecelia.milc, founder of ILHB) is I spent two years teaching women how to walk into a gym like they belonged there. How to grab the heavy dumbbells. How to stop apologizing for using a bench. How to take up space. Some of those women had never felt strong a day in their lives until that class. It was the greatest honor to watch these women relax, feel powerful and slowly disregard the male gaze.
So no, I’m not going to “relax, it’s just a joke.” Jokes tell you what a room already believes. And that room believed our bodies are theirs to grade.
We don’t wear leggings for you. We don’t do our hair for you. We don’t even exist for you, and that’s the part that seems to make men like this so uncomfortable.
Not all men. Just the ones on mainstream television.
That’s exactly why ILHB exists. A room with no men at the door, no one grading your outfit, no one deciding what you deserve based on what you’re wearing. Just women, music, and the kind of joy that doesn’t need anyone’s permission.
Wear the leggings. Wear the mini. Wear whatever you want. Then come dance with us.
Swipe through, read the receipts, and send this to a woman who’s ever felt watched.
