New York City Council is weighing 10 AI safety bills after an October 5 hearing with representatives of OpenAI, Google, Meta and Anthropic. Speaker Julie Menin led the hearing.
The proposals include a way for humans to shut down AI models, rewards for people who report violations, and reporting certain AI safety incidents involving city contracts to Cyber Command within 24 hours. These measures remain proposals.
Elon Musk’s SpaceXAI missed the October 5 hearing despite a subpoena. The Council announced on October 13 that the company had agreed to testify on October 16.
