Grindr is training its AI on your photos, your age, and your taps by default, without asking. This video shows where the app buried the off switch.

The stakes are particularly high on an app like Grindr. Numerous countries criminalize same-sex relations, so being outed through your data can be dangerous.

In 2021, Norway’s privacy regulator fined Grindr for sharing user data with advertisers without valid consent.

The same year, Monsignor Jeffrey Burrill, then the general secretary of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, resigned after a Catholic news site said it obtained commercially available records of when and where devices had used Grindr, and correlated one to him.

And last month, Grindr agreed to pay £26 million to settle UK users’ claims from UK users who alleged the app shared their personal information (in some cases including HIV status) with outside companies. The company admitted no liability.

Grindr’s AI, trained on your data by default, now powers EDGE—a premium subscription the company has tested at prices as much as $350 a month.
