When Microsoft launched the original Xbox in 2001, it faced a major challenge in Japan, where Sony PlayStation and Nintendo already dominated the video game industry. The original console’s bulky design was one of several obstacles, prompting Microsoft to rethink how its next-generation gaming hardware would appeal to Japanese consumers and international audiences.
During development of the Xbox 360, Microsoft explored numerous hardware prototypes and worked to create a more refined, approachable console with a distinctive curved design. Japanese consumer preferences helped influence that direction, alongside Microsoft’s broader ambition to compete with the PlayStation 3 and Nintendo Wii. Released in 2005, the Xbox 360 became a defining console of the seventh generation, remembered for Xbox Live, Halo 3, Gears of War, and an entire era of online multiplayer gaming.
