What do you need to become a burlesque performer?
-Effort, with respect for what you’re doing and who you’re doing it for
-Creativity
Not a perfect body, not a huge budget, not a high level of dance skill. Those two things will make up for everything. When I had no space to rehearse, I played Jake Blues and stood at a microphone the whole time. When I had no money, I developed concepts around what I had access to so that the result was intentional, not inadequate. When I felt like shit about my body I remembered that nobody’s ever booed me off stage because I don’t look like a GQ model. I won’t speak for being a touring performer, I only dabble in that when I can. But locally? Remember this is literally art. The only rule is don’t be an asshole. Care about what you do. Get your creative drive turbo charged. And you can do this.
