Juan Atkins, techno pioneer and member of Cybotron, The Belleville Three, and Borderland, has passed away at the age of 64.  Atkins first met Derrick May and Kevin Saunderson in junior high school, forming The Belleville Three; a pioneering electronic music trio credited with inventing the genre of techno in Belleville, Michigan.  The Belleville Three crafted their unique strand of electronic music based on their experiences with Chicago house music as well as their love of the futuristic synth work of Kraftwerk, Parliament, and Prince. Atkins credits Parliament specifically with inspiring him to buy his first synthesizer.  In 1980, Atkins formed Cyobotron alongside Richard “3070” Davis while living in Detroit, Michigan. Cybotron became early innovators of Detroit techno, combining instrumental electronic music with funk and afrofuturist themes.  Atkins would later found the record label Metroplex and begin releasing solo music under the name Model 500.  He has been called “The Godfather of Techno” and the “original pioneer of Detroit techno.”  Atkins reportedly suffered a heart attack before his show at Yu Yu Club in Mexico City on October 31. His death was confirmed by his management company, Green Smith Artists.
