When a Boundary Becomes an Identity
For years, I said, “I’m not a gym person.” Yet for the past few months, I’ve been going to the gym three or more times a week.
During a Meditate With Me class, I remembered where that statement began: in a relationship where I felt pressured to become someone else’s version of who I should be.
“The relationship ended, but the protective statement remained.”
What began as a way of protecting my autonomy had become part of how I described myself.
That realization brought so much compassion for my younger self. I can honor what she was trying to protect while allowing my understanding of myself to reflect the life I’m living today.
