Chapter 25: The Bee

How do you know if a man is flirting or just being nice?
You don’t. You find out later, and by then you’ve already decided something.

I was at a car wash on a Tuesday. A good one. Glass waiting room, air conditioning, coffee that wasn’t terrible.

I waited outside anyway. There were chairs under a canopy with the sun on them, and I will always pick the sun.

I had been there forty minutes. My car was third in line.

There were planters along the wall. That’s where the bee came from.

It landed on my arm.

I don’t move when I’m scared. Some people scream. I go completely still, which is worse, because nobody notices and nobody helps.

A man walked past, saw it, and waved it away without stopping.

Then he came back.

“You’re welcome,” he said.

I hadn’t said thank you.

We talked for the rest of the wait. He asked what I did. I said I used to study engineering. He asked why I said “used to.”

I said it was a long story. He said he had three cars in front of him.

He was thirty-four. He told me without being asked, like it was something he preferred to put on the table early.

I did the math in the car afterwards. Then I stopped doing the math.

When my car came out he asked for my number. I gave him my Instagram instead.

I’d like to say that was caution. It wasn’t. It was so I could look at his photos first.

He wrote the next morning at 9:14.

“How’s the bee?”

I answered in under a minute, which I would prefer not to have done.

We texted all day. About nothing.

At night: “There’s a place I go on Fridays. You’re coming with me.”

Not a question.

I read it four times looking for the question.

Then I said yes.

I have a tough financial decision to make. I took Hubbard in to see the ophthalmologist, to find out if he's a candidate for cataract surgery to restore his sight. Luckily, he is. But here's the catch. The doctor said he's had these cataracts for years and years and the dumbed down version that I could understand is it makes his eyes weaker. The surgery is still an option, but the success rates are at 70% instead of the 90% expected for most dogs.
The surgery isn't cheap, and it's gone up $1200 from the last time I took Cat the dog in for it. I'm notoriously bad with money, so I'll probably go for it. But at the same time, I need to be somewhat practical since I'm living off of my retirement.

I threw in a couple other pics from the last several days, and the last one is a video of Alice circumventing the footstool iI put in a chair to keep him out. (He has his own chair that he's ruined, so I'd like to keep this one for myself. ). I shouldn't be surprised by his antics, but somehow I always am.

I see where a lot of these comments are going, and no I don't want to do a fundraiser, or have people donate. the decision to keep so many senior dogs is mine and they're my responsibility. But as i've said in the past, i'm lucky enough sometimes to get promotions for products i believe in, and that helps offset these costs.
