Shade exists on a gradient. There is hard shade, shady with dappled sun, shady with some morning sun and shady with afternoon sun. For full hard shade, I often use Christmas ferns, wild geranium and native sedges. For shade with morning sun you can select shade/partial sun plants (blue stemmed goldenrod, penstemon, spikenard, native sedges) and for shade with afternoon sun you need partial sun/full sun plants like coneflowers, Western Indian Physic and Tall Thimbleweed).
