I was not gong to pose in a photo that makes me look like I’m in a unit with Meri and Janelle. Being on the bottom sucks, and I felt like I was on the bottom in the family. I feel like not having a voice here puts me back on the bottom. #sisterwives #photorecreation #novoice

2027 sounding good already 💿

Which one should i release first? 🤔

I go into this topic in my new essay called “The Feminist Urge to Blame Men for Women’s (Hypothetical) Choices: Sexual Coercion, Victim Identity, and Voice Note Guy.” You can read it via Substack or by downloading the PDF from my Big Cartel shop (both linked in bio). Both versions are $5. Email me if you are unable to afford the $5 price, and I’ll send it to you (junowayward@gmail.com)

The essay is about the dangerous misinterpretations of feminist consent theory and sexual coercion that so many people hold, and the way those people interpret harmless (albeit uncomfortable or painful) interactions as sexual violence. I write about how a lot of the discourse about “voice note guy” was an instance of a larger trend among some feminists of pre-emptively putting women in the victim role whenever they’re imagined to feel even the slightest degree of sexual pressure from men. This view infantilizes women by assuming they lack the agency to navigate social pressure, willfully make choices, and take responsibility for those choices.

I recognize it as an attempt to counter# the dominant social messaging of rape culture which asserts that women are always to blame for any harassment, abuse, or violence they experience from men, but we should be careful not to over-correct by fostering the cultural conditions for false reports of sexual violence, viewing men as psychologically more powerful than women, and viewing women as perpetual victims who are always disempowered when relating with men. I argue that, as women, we need to be able to distinguish dynamics in which we’re victims of men from those in which we aren’t, for the purpose of utilizing our agency where we have it and learning to become more relationally empowered.
