The most boring job on Earth just got automated by China, for free. It’s called Unlimited OCR, it comes from Baidu, and it’s small enough to run on your own computer. An OCR tool takes a scanned document and turns it into text your computer can work with. Every other one chops the document into pages and loses the thread in the middle. This one reads the whole thing at once.

Here’s how to use it:

1. Open the free demo on Hugging Face and drop in a scanned PDF or a photo of a page. No install.
2. Get back clean, structured text with every table and heading where it belongs.
3. Feed it a scanned financial report and it keeps the formulas and the reading order intact.
4. Want it local? Install the model with Python and run one file, or batch a whole folder of PDFs with the included script.

In the film it was written for, this waltz plays from a loudspeaker. The film follows volunteers in the Virgin Lands of Kazakhstan, and the loudspeaker detail comes from the Boston Symphony Orchestra's page on the work. In the original score, according to the same text, the melancholy melody begins on an alto saxophone and then passes to the trombones. The variety orchestra of the title, the page says, uses dance-band instruments: four saxophones, plus guitar and accordion. Beneath the melody, double basses and snare drum mark an oom-pah-pah that the page calls ironic, with a circus-like feel. And the page points to a contrast: the theme is light, and the accompaniment around it is dark.

Listen again, this time for the tempo: the waltz opens a little slower, with only the beat of the accompaniment, and gradually speeds up over the course of the excerpt. Listen for the last moments too: with no new note, the sound fades away, and that is when Joelle's hands leave the keyboard and stay in the air.

The text that comes with the original video says Joelle studies piano with the pianist Shirley Lo, and the recording credits place the concert in the Hong Kong Cultural Centre Concert Hall. In the suite's instrumentation, the piano is already there: two of them, inside the orchestra, according to the work's listing on the Boosey & Hawkes site. In this version, the piano is the soloist. Right at the opening, Joelle's feet, in silver shoes, rest on a black platform in front of the pedals. And in the close-up shots, the polished wood behind the keys reflects Joelle's hands.
