October 2026: A high proportion of elite British soldiers have invoked their privilege against self-incrimination, according to the judge overseeing the inquiry into Afghan war crimes.

Many SAS troopers have refused to answer questions as part of an inquiry into alleged war crimes committed in Afghanistan.🇬🇧

Lord Justice Charles Haddon-Cave said that written requests for information were sent to numerous SAS troopers linked to the deliberate detention operations (DDOs) at the center of the allegations.

“A high proportion have indicated their intention to rely on their privilege against self-incrimination and have refused to answer any questions asked by the inquiry,” the judge said, as cited by various newspapers.

The inquiry has also faced difficulties obtaining documents from the MoD. 🇬🇧

In April, British media reported that SAS troops were resigning in significant numbers over fears of prosecution related to past operations.

“Morale is shit at the moment,” was quoted by an unnamed insider as saying. Brigadier Ed Butler, head of the SAS Regimental Association and other former commanders have argued that continuous legal probes damage morale, hinder recruitment, and create a climate where soldiers hesitate in life-or-death situations. 🇬🇧

These cases raises a question that goes to the heart of Britain’s national security: How can we expect our finest soldiers to take extraordinary risks in defense of this country if they face years of legal uncertainty over decisions made in combat? These situations are not acceptable. Period. 🇬🇧

A MoD spokesman said: “Our personnel are respected worldwide for their professionalism and dedication, and they make extraordinary sacrifices in defense of the nation. 🇬🇧

We are still seeing those soldiers that served in Northern Ireland being dragged through the courts, and fear its loopholes will still be exploited.

The stakes are measured in decades of service. More than 250,000 personnel took part in Operation Banner, the longest continuous deployment in British military history, during which 1,441 UK military personnel died. 🇬🇧 @pagoda22sas .
